Hyperliquid unified accounts change how a wallet balance should be read
A wallet’s collateral model matters as much as its position list. The current account-mode documentation explains why adding spot and perp totals can misstate its available capital.
Hyperliquid’s current documentation distinguishes unified accounts, portfolio margin and manual or standard accounts. In a unified account, a balance for a given collateral asset is shared across its spot trading and cross-margin perpetual positions. Standard accounts keep separate spot and perpetual balances. These are different views of capital, even when the wallet address is identical.
The implication for wallet comparison
Our analysis: a tracker should establish the account mode before it combines balances. Adding a shared spot balance to a per-DEX figure as though both were independent deposits can count the same capital twice. An impressive account-value figure then becomes a poor basis for comparing traders or deciding how much of a strategy to copy.
The documentation also says that unified and portfolio-margin API users see balances and holds in the spot clearinghouse state; individual perp-DEX user states are not meaningful balance totals for those modes. This does not remove the need to inspect individual positions and their margin requirements.
What to check before drawing a conclusion
- Read the account mode and the time of the observation together with the balance.
- Separate total account value, collateral allocated to positions and the amount available to withdraw.
- Keep collateral denominations visible rather than silently treating every asset balance as a dollar balance.
- Treat missing account-mode or balance evidence as a limitation of the comparison.
This is analysis of the documentation checked on 29 September, not a claim that the account modes launched today. For wallet research, the practical result is straightforward: compare like-for-like measures, and revisit an interpretation when the underlying account configuration changes.
